  • January 2025 Reading Recap

    February 5, 2025

34 😱 for January, made possible by reading through 2 established series that were all available from the library.
    Only 4 newly published books
    10 rereads

The Kay Scarpetta series started out strong but I’m getting increasingly annoyed with all of the main characters and how they act towards each other and how highly they think of themselves. There’s only a few left in the series and I’m not sure I’ll finish it.

  • The Dark Half by Stephen King

    October 27, 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Creepy sorta precursor to The Outsider. The pen name of an author somehow starts murdering people.

  • The Christmas Jigsaw Murders by Alexandra Benedict

    October 21, 2024

This is a fun book for anyone who likes cozy mysteries and doing puzzles. It’s told from both the killer’s perspective as well as the detective’s. The killer starts sending puzzle pieces to Edie O’Sullivan on December 1st, which helps her solve the crimes. Her nephew is a DI so she gets inside information on the cases.

I had actually read this book back in March for the first time, and when it popped up as an option on Netgalley I scooped it up because I thought it was a second in the series (because the cover was a different color). But I’ve read enough books since then so it was a pleasure to read again.

This is my ideal story type – British woman solving mysteries that aren’t too scary. The narrator was very easy to listen to and believable as a person of this age and temperament.

Special thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the chance to (re) listen to this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

  • Christmas Crimes at the Mysterious Bookshop – Otto Penzler

    October 21, 2024

This is a fun collection of twelve Christmastime stories written for the Mysterious Bookshop in NYC. The requirements to be included in the collection are as follows: be set at Christmastime, involve a crime of some kind, or the suspicion of one, and be set at least partially in the Mysterious Bookshop.

I had a great time listening to this audiobook and was pleased to discover several new to me authors that I will have fun exploring in the future. I had already read books by Laura Lippman, Tom Mead, Jeffrey Deaver and Rob Hart, so I was also happy to have authors known to me included.

I had a very hard time choosing which story was my favorite – it came down to a four way tie between Wolf Trap, Hester’s Gift, Sargent Santa and Here We Come A-Wassailing.

This would be a great collection to re-read each holiday season to get you in the mood for a trip to NYC, stopping by The Mysterious Bookshop, and solving mysteries there. I really liked it when a fictional version of Otto Penzler was included in the stories.

Here is a list of the stories and their authors:

    1. Black Christmas by Jason Starr
    2. A midnight clear by Lyndsay Faye
    3. Wolf Trap by Loren D Estleman
    4. Secret Santa by Ace Atkins
    5. The gift of the Wise Guy by Rob Hart
    6. Snowflake Time by Laura Lippman
    7. The Christmas Party by Jeffrey Deaver
    8. Here We Come A-Wassailing by Thomas Perry
    9. A Christmas Puzzle by Ragnar Jónasson
    10. Hester’s Gift by Tom Mead
    11. Sargent Santa by David Gordon
    12. End Game by Martin Edwards

The narrators (Jennifer Pickens and Graham Rawat) did a great job too.

Special thanks to Netgalley and RBMedia for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

  • Horror for Weenies by Emily C. Hughes

    September 15, 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In the past few years I’ve tried to start watching scary movies a little bit more, so this book seemed right up my alley. It takes 25 horror movies starting in 1960 up to 2018 and explains the plot and common scary movie tropes that go along with the film.

More importantly though, it explains what was going on culturally at the time and how that relates to why each film was made when it was in response to the culture. Very fascinating.

Here is a list of the movies covered:

    • Psycho
    • Night of the Living Dead
    • Rosemary’s Baby
    • The Exorcist
    • The Wicker Man
    • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    • Carrie
    • Halloween
    • The Shining
    • Poltergeist
    • The Thing
    • A Nightmare on Elm Street
    • The Fly
    • Hellraiser
    • Candyman
    • Scream
    • The Blair Witch Project
    • The Ring
    • 28 Days Later
    • Saw
    • The Conjuring
    • The Babadook
    • It Follows
    • Get Out
    • Hereditary

Special thanks to NetGalley and RBMedia for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion. I was so intrigued by this that I went ahead and purchased my own copy of the Kindle book to have on hand for future reference.

  • The Best Mystery Stories of the Year 2024 – Penzler

    September 12, 2024

This collection of stories is more gritty/realistic than my usual favorite type: cozy British person solving a mystery. But it’s still a very good collection of mystery stories that I would recommend any fan of the genre to read.

I was super excited that one of the narrators is BJ Harrison, who narrates the Classic Tales podccast and many audiobooks. His voice is so pleasant to listen to. I hadn’t heard the female narrator (Kim Niemi) before, but she was also very easy to listen to and I’d be happy to listen to her narrate anything in the future.

The story that will stick with me the most is the one where a grandfather teaches his grandson how to swim, but I really enjoyed all of the stories in the collection.

Of the authors on the list. I had only ever heard of/read books by Jeffery Deaver. But that’s what’s great about collections like this, you get to discover new authors and go and read their backlist if you like them. Here is the list of authors and their story titles. Please excuse any typos on the titles as I was listening to the audiobook and might have misheard.

    – Ace Atkins – Stunts
    – Michael Bracken – Beat the Clock
    – Fleur Bradley – How to Teach Yourself to Swim
    – Shelley Costa – The Knife Sharpener
    – Doug Crandell – Down the Fire Road
    – Jeffery Deaver – The Lady in my Life
    – Brendan Dubois – Snow Bound
    – John Floyd – Last Day at the Jackrabbit
    – Nils Gilbertson – Lovely and Useful Things
    – Peter Hayes – El Paso Heat
    – Shells Legoullon – The Back Woods
    – Victor Methos – Kill Night
    – Leonardo Padura – A Family Matter
    – Dan Pope – Snow Over Harvard
    – Annie Reed – Dead Names
    – Cameron Sanders – Billowing Down The Bayou
    – Anna Scotti – Its Not Even Passed
    – Archer Sullivan – Good Harvest
    – Andrew Welsh-Huggins – Wonder Falls
    – Stacy Woodson – One Night in 1965
    – Frank L Baum – The Suicide of Kiaros

Special thanks to NetGalley and RBmedia for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
